“The Heart of the Serpent,” by Ivan Yefremov. Found in the anthology More Soviet Science Fiction, compiled by Isaac Asimov, translated by R. Prokofieva, and originally printed in 1962 by the Crowell-Collier Publishing Company.

I stole the idea of analyzing a book I personally find to be lacking from [livejournal.com profile] kippurbird, who is currently working on an Anita Blake novel. This first post doesn't really get into the things that led me to doing it to the short story "Heart of the Serpent," but we have to start somewhere, no?
