Remember that letter to the editor?

Well, my letter to the editor re: gay marriage got both printed in the paper and posted on their website, where people can comment on it. There are 79 comments for yesterday's letters - I have only read through the first few, but so far they've all been in response to my letter.

Note that the fourth comment down starts with "Kathryn Kramer, I find it very sad that you are asexual. Sex is one of the greatest pleasures a human being can have."

Congratulations, "nobama," on proving that even in hippietown, there are plenty of people with their heads up their asses when it comes to sexuality. I'm thinking my response will start with "nobama, I'm find it very sad that you're so closed-minded. Approaching topics like human sexuality intelligently is one of the greatest intellectual pleasures a human being can have."

Heheh. I'm about to post, and I've changed the first sentence to '"nobama," I find it very sad that you are so closed-minded as to be unable to prevent yourself from projecting your values onto other people.'

There are a lot of people trying to tell me that I'm a radical, uninformed nutjob. :( But a few seem to get it.

Nah, I kept the second sentence - so it's the same thing except that I clarified that the closed-mindedness involved projection of values. We'll see if anyone picks up on my comment.

I think this whole experience, from the moment I started reading responses, has really been kind of mortifying. I offer an argument (maybe a bit of a radical one, but one I feel is valid), and some of the responses border on personal attacks.

I read your letter when you posted it, but didn't comment (duh~! XD) Commenting now, though! I thought it was really well written and made some very excellent points. I'm really sorry that it seems no one out there *waves vaguely in the direction of people not in our incredibly elite and awesome circle of open-minded individuals* can see that. =/

One of them did raise the point that one can get "married" to anyone one wants if one can find the right church - it just won't be recognized by the state. So I suppose it wasn't technically correct for me to say that the law prevents the performance of a religious ceremony, but I still say that there's a whopping big difference between being married and being "married." One guy suggested the very Libertarian notion that either the government should recognize all marriages between consenting adults, or just not recognize any marriages at all and have it be purely religious rather than legal. It's an extreme statement, but it's sort of where my argument does lead.

One guy told me that the last sentence in my letter could be used to argue in favor of pedophiles and polygamists. Polygamists, yeah - while I'm not personally comfortable with the idea, and it's not something I'd want for me and mine, if all the parties involved are consenting adults I suppose it is (or should be) their right. The suggestion that I'm in support of pedophiles marrying children, though, is way out of line, especially since I was careful to include the phrase "consenting adults" in my original argument.
